City of Rocks Vacation Rentals – How We Got Started

The City of Rocks has been our go to get away since Ross and I were first married.   We loved to visit his family and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings.  We often talked about how much we would love to make Almo – the gateway of the City of Rocks National Reserve-  our home. How awesome would it be to live where you wanted to be the most?   But we never thought we could make it work.  There were a lot of HUGE obstacles:  housing and employment.  Well…I guess we manifested our dream, because things worked out and here we are!  We are living in our happy place!

After living in Almo for about 6 years we were discussing how many visitors the City of Rocks and Castle Rock were getting.  We realized that visitors to the city of Rocks needed more lodging options. Camping and hotels are not everyone’s cup of tea.  Plus they were often booked.  So, we set about creating a studio apartment we would want to stay in on our vacation.  We put in a full kitchen, comfy beds, big screen TV, comfort and convenience .  And then we listed it on airbnb.com.

What an adventure it has been!   We have met so many amazing people from around the world. And it’s so awesome to be able to share our happy place with others.

Our adventure wasn’t over there.  The next year at City of Rocks Retreat was the year of the cabin.  We have been blessed to be able to purchase and renovate Ross’s grandparent’s log cabin.  Many said we shouldn’t do it and even  that we couldn’t.  But we are pretty sentimental and couldn’t just watch it deteriorate. We spent months  gutting, rewiring, filling up cracks between logs, staining and painting.  All the work was worth it.  It is awesome!  Check out the pictures of our journey.

That fall we were able to acquire and build the Pinion Yurt. It sits behind the cabin in a private setting and uses the old restored outhouse that belonged to Ross’s grandparents. It is off the grid and provides a more comfortable camping experience.

The latest addition is the Sage Tipi. It goes up each spring and offers a unique camping experience with a private fire pit and a newly built rustic outhouse.
